It seems as if anything I write is met with both harsh criticism, and loud applause. Sometimes that criticism is not even relevant to an article. As an example, I could write about Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) being installed in Ford (F) vehicles, and a number of critics will insist on commenting that Sirius XM Radio spends too much on “overpriced” talent. It will have nothing to do with the topic but none the less, they persist. This weekends focus of such comments seems to have landed on Sirius XM’s newest acquisition, Rosie O’Donnell. This despite the fact that Rosie’s contract terms have never been disclosed. Of course this opens the door to further criticism regarding Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters and Martha Stewart channels and contracts.

For years Sirius and XM as separate entities fought furiously for listeners. The fiercest fighting came from professional sports leagues, Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony, Bubba “The Love Sponge” and basically anything that appealed to 30 year old plus males. Most people are aware of this and some have suggested that the company should direct its attention to a younger audience, which it has now in fact done by becoming a mobile player through the new Apple (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch app. The problem with the younger generation of course is that its disposable monthly income pales in comparison to its elder generations. Women for the most part have been ignored.

If the potential market for Satellite Radio is an assumed 350 million subscribers, the lack of female marketing would then reduce that potential to only 175 million potential male subscribers, given a 50/50 male/female population split. Make no mistake about it, women are not only as important to Sirius XM’s success as their male counterparts but I would argue more so.

The first and most obvious reason is the basic demographic itself. If more women subscribe to Sirius XM the better off the company will be. It is much deeper than that that however. By making the product more female friendly, it is more likely that families with multiple cars will upgrade to a family plan. If Dad’s got Satellite Radio in his car, and Mom has it in her car, it’s a pretty safe bet that Junior will want it in his car in the years to come, especially if the girl he likes happens to have it as well.

Appealing to a female demographic opens the door to new advertising revenue potential, not only for products that appeal to women only but for products and services that would appeal to families and children.  It also will result in lower subscriber acquisition costs (SAC), greater ARPU and lower churn and deactivation rates.

Finally, when a family sits down to go over a monthly budget during hard times, it is likely that a lone male will be over-ridden on his desire to maintain a Satellite Radio subscription by a wife who sees no value in the product. This concept can also be applied to the purchase of a new car or truck. Do I even need to explain this concept? If you don’t understand it, you are probably single.

The bottom line is that Sirius XM needs to appeal to all of the people, all of the time, or as close as it can get. Sirius XM has yet to spend even a fraction of what it spent to reach its male audience on reaching a female audience, and now that it has merged, will not have to.

Welcome to the future of radio, Ms. O’Donnell.

Yeah, but is Rosie O’Donnell really a woman? Lol. I KEED! I KEED!

Actually I dig her. Martha too. And girlfriend, don’t even get me started about Miss Oprah and her Vah-jay-jay.

Ok. So I don’t listen to their shows. But Hey, I’m a dude. I get where you’re coming from tho Brandon, and I concur. Women are going to be a HUGE part of the future success of SiriusXM – And I am all for having more Estrogen on the sat waves. Especially those sexy playmate disc jockeys on the Playboy channel. :-)

In all seriousness tho…one of my favorite programs on Sirius is the Stephanie Miller political show weeknights from 8-9pm.

Brandon, You must be married. Did this come from the MRS.? Honestly, did it? Great article….but why did it take an elbow from the Mrs., for you to finally write it? If you look at the makeup of the Board of Directors….I believe there is only ONE woman! Why???? It would be interesting to know what percentage, makes up the total subscriber base…
A great article. Diversity is the key!
Except for my portfolio. Go Sirius

So this weekend, my wife tells me she now wants Sirius installed in her car. I go to Bestbuy to get it installed, & the installer discloses that they’re out of FM direct adapters. The guy in front of me had bought the last one, & take a guess; yep, he was getting it installed on his wife’s car as well. The installer then calls other stores in the city, and they are also completely out. I asked him if Sirius is that popular, & he discloses that it is the #1 installed product they have, and that they’ve been selling them like hotcakes.

I then take the wife’s car to the local Car Toys, who promptly installs the radio. I also posed the same question to these guys, & basically received the same response. In fact, SIRI is the first item displayed when you enter the store.

Is anyone else hearing of such positive trends on sales, especially towards the female demographic?

Brandon, I can find no fault with this article. Especially the comment about comments not being pertinent. When the economy roars, and it will, Sirius XM will join the ride. And women will be a huge part of it. It’s all part of Mel’s strategy. Leave a huge untapped market, just like the oil exploration companies, for future growth. I hope they (S-XM) see it as you do.

Brandon, don’t get insulted if someone talked about something other than your subject. look on the bright side .. HERE..we feel safe like with family and friends who are in the same boat, and you should use that to your advantage by taking notes and making research for future articles.
about women, when i was a kid i heard my uncle once say to a large group of men that women have half brains..i always believed that. so today all sirius XM have to do to attract women is inform them that this radio is NOT for free

I’ve also noticed recently that almost every time I login to my AOL mail, a Sirius banner appears. Yes, a Sirius banner on AOL! For me, this confirms that they are finally serious about advertising. (Don’t shoot me for having AOL).
