The rumors from Orbitcast are true. Last night Sirius XM Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI) unveiled its new BlackBerry page on its website. Apparently, there are multiple BlackBerry (Nasdaq: RIMM) apps available, specifically designed for various models. Listed models include the BlackBerry Curve 8500, Curve 8900, Bold 9000, Bold 9700, Storm, Storm 2 9500 and the Tour.

The full Internet lineup seems to be available, with the notable exception of Howard Stern once again. Sirius XM’s webpage boasts 120 channels of commercial free music across every genre, complimented by news, talk, comedy, entertainment and sports. Opie and Anthony as well as Oprah and Martha Stewart are available, as is Sirius XM’s popular Doctor Radio channel.

The app is free and Sirius XM is giving away free 7 day trial subscriptions for those who want to test drive the news, sports, talk, entertainment and comedy lineups, not to mention the commercial free music channels.

The BlackBerry app launch compliments Sirius XM’s Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch app which skyrocketed to the top of iTunes in popularity, in the days following its release.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android users will have to continue to wait for the time being it appears, but don’t fret….those rumors should begin within a month or so.

Thats an awsome developement! This opens up yet another entire market of users. Will there be some sort of dash mount fixture available soon such as the Skydock?
I wonder if our president, an avid Blackberry user will be the next subscriber?
    Go Sirius!

The Pres. had to give up his Blackberry to the Secret Service when he was brought in for security reasons. However, this is a great developement and good timing. I hope there are more developements coming soon!

Brandon, do we know exactly why Howard Stern is unavailable on the Blackberry and the iPhone? Why wouldn’t Howard allow for this, seriously? TIA timd

I understand he owns the rights but wht wouldn’t he still aloow for it– he knows SIRI needs help getting over a buck and that would be one way he could help the cause. Look, he’s already rich beyond imagination so what gives? The whole thing just doesn’t make any sense! Something is fishy in my opinion. timd

Downloaded the app off of siriusxm.com/blackberry via my Bold 9000. Like the app and listening to it on my BB is as good as my car. Probably better because overpasses don’t block my sat signal.

So how long till the “Blackberry SkyDock” comes out or are there to many models of Blackberries to have one universal SkyDock?

  • XMRIDER says:

I don’t see a need for a “blackberry skydock”. This is a good value add for existing subscribers. It also will allow blackberry users to test drive the service to see how they like it. For those that want the full service satelite radio….they can just go and get an ONYX or other basice sat. radio. Then for just an additional $2.99 for premium service, they have a car and portable satelite radio….Most blackberry users…in my opinion….don’t want to use their blackberrys’ as radios in the car…as opposed to iphone/ipod touch users…..

Ok, just for clarification, and to correct me if I am wrong?

I understand that when the iphone app was launched it was only available through AT&T in the United States? It was not a ‘world’ phone?

The iphone had a decent amount of Sirius app downloads, but does anyone know the ratio of actual subs gained in comparison to the app downloads? Fourth Qtr results for 2009 will only reflect the AT&T iphone subs?

With that said, the Blackberry’s are ‘World’ phones correct? Does this mean that Sirius just gained a broader coverage area and possibly the most cell phone coverage at this time?

I have also learned that Vodafone UK released the iphone on January 14th, 2010 and sold approx 50,000 unit’s the first day? It looks like there are other carriers as well in that area that sold iphones. Not to mention, if all goes well for Verizon in June, we may start to see the iphone 4G on their network. Will all of this opportunity contribute to new possible subs for Sirius for the Qtr 1 and 2 results of 2010?

In my opinion, if these apps work world wide, this could contribute to a lot more phone app subscriptions, which could be fed into many autos and homes in many other countries via docking stations without the cost of launching more sats or territory take-overs.

Could we be underestimating this avenue of technology? Does anyone have more statistics on this?
