Soon after Howard Stern joined Sirius XM Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI), the mainstream media began to write that Stern had lost his relevance. For the last five years, they have also constantly reminded everyone of the costs associated with Stern’s contract. They have used broad strokes to criticize the $500 million deal, while withholding the fact that the deal includes far more than Stern’s salary alone.
Stern’s lifelong radio partner, Robin Quivers for example, is consistently ignored by the media. The deal made by Stern included the salaries of not only Quivers, but the production costs of the show and “rat pack” personality salaries such as Artie Lange. Stern has handled the responsibility that came with the deal, better than Wall Street executives handle their own businesses. President Obama and Congress could learn a thing or two on fiscal responsibility from the shock jock.
The deal was a good deal for both Sirius and The Stern Show, not just Stern alone. In fact, the Stern deal was probably the best deal that Sirius had made as a stand alone company, with subscriber revenues far exceeding the cost of the contract. Sirius and the NFL for example also had a $500 million deal, which brings in far less than Stern in revenue.
The Stern show is original content, and the current delivery vehicle is Satellite Radio, just as this article is written content, and the delivery vehicle is Satwaves.com. With Stern’s contract up for renewal later this year, the terrestrial radio lobby attempted to confuse listeners into believing that Stern might bring the show back to terrestrial radio airwaves. Stern finally abolished the notion live on the air in a recent show, when he announced that he has no desire to be censored on ad based radio.
Now the hedge fund supported media has found a new avenue for their fear mongering, by suggesting that Stern might replace Simon Cowell on American Idol. This is more than a reach in its merit. For starters, Stern hates the idea of American Idol and has blamed the show in part for the denigration of the music industry, as it ignores talent that has paid its dues for years. Stern has encouraged his listeners to corrupt the voting on American Idol by asking that they vote for the WORST contestants.
Beyond that, do I really need to state the obvious? Could you imagine Stern asking a nervous Idol contestant how big her breasts are, whether or not they are real, or having her turn around so we can have a look at her derriere? Or asking whether or not they are still virgins or to ask about sexual preferences and experiences? I mean, who are we kidding here? The family oriented show would be boycotted by families and Christian groups on a simple announcement.
I’m not suggesting that Stern could not do it, because Stern is certainly smart enough and talented enough to pull it off, if he decided to change careers at this point of his life. This would mean however, that Stern’s political importance would come to an end. It would mean selling out his lifelong business partner, Robin Quivers, who has supported Stern through thick and thin, trial and tribulation, for decades. It would mean the abandonment of those closest to him.
Never letting the facts get in the way of a good story, once reputable industry publications such as TheStreet.com and Barrons are suddenly consumed with Howard Stern and the show’s future, after years of criticizing the king of all media. You can find dozens of articles between the two publications that speculate of Stern’s potential departure from Sirius XM’s airwaves, but not a single one on Stern’s on-air rejection of terrestrial radio offers. In the end, it boils down to motives, and the intentional omission of fact is as good as a lie. Once these lies are brought to light, the credibility of these publications suffer.
The idea that Stern would walk away from his life’s work and the most popular radio show ever created, which he and Quivers spent more than twenty years building, one listener at a time, is lunacy. That said, it would be quite interesting to see Stern in a guest role on Idol, if only to fluster the contestants with those patented “Stern type” of questions and to mock the FCC one more time.
Position: Long SIRI

You make a good point, which is also the first thing I thought of when hearing about his potential on Idol. There is no way that it would even be a possibility. I understand that he could be ruthless like Simon, but at the same time Simon is ruthless when it comes to “talent” and music, Stern is ruthless when it comes to breast. He would never vote for a male on the show and would pay no attention to the vocal talent put forth by the ladies, it would completely destroy the show and everything (good or bad) that it stands for. The idea of Howard on Idol is just stupid and the way that the story is being pushed by the media shows how absolutely gullible the ignorant public and investors are. Whether or not he will stay with Sirius, I would prefer he did, whether or not he goes to Idol, at the least, I’m not an absolute idiot.
Kudos Brandon…the chances of HS going to AI is about the same as the US selling alaska back to russia….never going to happen…just another ruse….they are getting desperate
If Sterns decides he doesnt want to retire, he will re-sign with Sirius–maybe with a different schedule such as afternoons, but he will re-sign
Now this is the kind of article that brought me to the SW blog…bringing reason to to an unreasonable situation. No doubt Howard’s not going anywhere, but it makes for good headlines. I suppose SXM management doesn’t mind the publicity since its basically free advertising that SXM is still alive, kicking and prospering. Unfortunately, for nervous retail stockholders who don’t like “uncertainty” they sell and the big guys just keep accumulating. For us Longs there is nothing to worry about imho SXM pps will be going up…fundamentals have changed and auto sales will meet Mel’s expectations…no doubt…and Howard will eventually resign.
Brandon, good article but you are way off base with your comment that “Stern hates the idea of American Idol”. Stern is an avid watcher of the show and talks about it frequently on his radio program.
Stern talks about by criticizing the show on his radio program.
Do I need to bring up his Kelly Clarkson Jokes or perhaps his “vote for the worst contestant” campaign” which kept sanjaya or whatever his name was in the competition while better singers got the boot?
How long ago were those names relevant? And jokes about people means he puts the show in poor favor? I’m sorry, but Stern constantly talks about the show as a means of entertainment. Some people are terrible, yes, but for years he has constantly followed it up to the end and even votes for it with his wife (last year constantly for that effeminate kid who won). Please obtain current facts before writing a report. Why not throw an OJ joke in this article too?
How’s life at the NAB treating you?
lol … I think your response proves my point.
Stern is afraid to fly, does not want to be away from his wife, NY apt. and S. Hampton mansion. Idol is someones fantasy. If you read posts from those who responded to yesterdays NY Post article clearly indicates viewers of Idol would not watch the show if Stern were to be a judge. Stern only appeals to a niche group. And yes, I am the original Secret Agent Man that was previously banned. I think it’s time to let those post here and stop the childish threats of banning people who have different opinions of those who adore this sites host.
Howard can’t retire yet and Sirius can’t afford to lose him. As far as Idol goes, he would be hilarious, but I just don’t see it. I think it would bore him very quickly. He also has no desire to move to LA.
Nice Brandon! I’m glad to see one writer chime in on The Howard will kill Sirius regarless if he stays or if he goes! The only fear I have is Beth O., and her influence she has on Howard, she’s been trying to get into the TV scene for a while and we all know that If Howard was an accountant she wouldn’t stand 10 feet from him. It’s tough to say, I mean with Artie gone
who really knows if this is the end. Idol is certainly a more prestigeous gig and than talking of retarded people and pornstars therefore Howard may climb that ladder. I certainly hope not especially if we lose subs because of his departure.
Excellent article, Brandon – Absolutely right on. It definitely seems to be in the best interests of both parties to have Howard remain on Sirius XM and this mutual interest should lead to a successful re-signing of a fair and equitable contract renewal after this period of negotiation tactics runs its course.
I refuse to click on anything that the Street or Motley publishes. I learned long ago that both are simply “Click Whore” publications.
This is all posturing… in order to gain a counter-offer from “whomever” and to try to force Sirius-Xm to match it. If Howard does get a matching offer I think Sirius-Xm would do well to simply let Stern go. In fact they should not even contimplate paying him anything remotely close to his last contract! They might loose a few hundred thousand subs over it, but the company would be much healthier finacially, in the long run. I really don’t think there would… or could ever be a matching offer.
I supect that when Stern resigns with Sirius, the media bashers will again be screaming loudly about his irrelevance.
I think Sirius should offer Stern’s channels as premium content and charge an extra buck for those who want it. Give stern a good portion of this reveneue and let him work under his own conditions.
I think Mel will offer terms that will be hard for him to turn down. Stern has money and while he won’t pull in another $100 mil per year going forward, I think for him its more about building his brand, while working less.
What’s the time frame here for “the street.com” to go bankrupt? This year? It’s a shame that people like Cramer and the like with thier experience can run a simple business on the up & up. He should be imbarassed! I wonder when he will announce to his listeners and fans that the show and publications are over, what will he blame it on???….
I’d like to see Jim Cramer as a guest on Howards Show! That would be classic!
Let see how that interview would start, “So Cramer, what’s it like having boy toy on your forhead”?
Why doesn’t Sirius send an e-mail survey to it’s subscribers with the following simple question:
HOW OFTEN DO YOU LISTEN TO HOWARD STERN?
1) EVERY DAY
2) SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK
3) ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK
4) ONCE IN A BLUE MOON
5) NEVER
Once the results are in, then we will know for sure how valuable he is to Sirius and its subscribers. We all submitted our e-mails when we subscribed, so why not use a service like Constantcontact.com to conduct the survey? Sounds like an essential bit of information as we approach contract time.
